Weigh the loss incurred by a commandment against its reward, and the gain of a sin against its loss. Consider three things and you will not come into the hands of sin. He used to say: If you have learned much Torah, do not claim credit for yourself, for that is what you were created for. Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai had five disciples, and these are they: Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus, Rabbi Joshua ben Chananiah, Rabbi Yose the Priest, Rabbi Simeon ben Netanel and Rabbi Elazar ben Arakh. He used to recount their praises. Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus is a plastered cistern that does not lose a drop. Rabbi Joshua: happy is she who bore him. Rabbi Yose is pious. Rabbi Simeon ben Netanel fears sin. And Rabbi Elazar ben Arakh is an ever-flowing spring. He used to say: If all the sages of Israel were in one pan of the scales and Eliezer ben Hyrcanus in the other, he would outweigh them all. He said to them: I prefer the words of Elazar ben Arakh, for your words are included in his. He said to them: Go out and see which is the bad path from which a person should keep away. One who borrows from a person is like one who borrows from the Omnipresent, blessed be He, as it is said: The wicked borrows and does not repay, but the righteous is gracious and gives. Know where you came from, where you are going, and before whom you will one day have to give account and reckoning. Where you came from: from a putrid drop. Where you are going: to a place of dust, worms and maggots. Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon says: When two sit together and no words of Torah pass between them, that is a session of scoffers, as it is said: Nor sat in the seat of scoffers. But when two sit together and words of Torah do pass between them, the Divine Presence rests among them, as it is said: Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who feared the Lord and thought on His name. This tells me only about two. How do I know that even when one person sits and occupies himself with Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, sets a reward for him?
